I like to turkey hunt in the morning and it is really good. I have heard that it is not as good in the evening. Do they still like to call back to a hen call and come toward it in the evening? How good is turkey hunting in the evening?
A horn dog male is a horn dog male whether it is in the morning or at night, although they are much much more active in the morning. I called in a good Tom last year right before sunset, but certainly don't have as much luck at it!
The best luck in the evening I have had is going into where they roost and waiting for them to come in from feeding. I also have good luck with a locator call like a crow or owl call to catch them as they are roosting.
GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING! Great question! How good is turkey hunting in the evening?
If u know where they roost and can get close without boosting them then you should set up between the birds and the roost. If with hens the toms will follow them to the roost wanting to be close to them for the am fly down. if you are set up close he might slip by to take a peek at a new girl before going to bed. Most likely he will fly up and tell you everything he is going to do to you tomorrow morning. If he is alone and heading to roost he might think getting a new hen right before bed is a good thing. Turkey hunting is good anytime you can get in the turkey woods. The more time in the woods the better chance of hearing and seeing turkeys. THe bes time is about noon. MOst hunters have given up and the hens are away laying. TOms have taken a breather and are horny again. I have killed more between 11 and 1 as anytime. Evening means you have a timer. YOu have to know where they are going and get close to that spot and set up.
i really have not had that great of luck when hunting for turkey in the afternoon. In the afternoon, they go back to roost and unless you know where they roost at and are waiting for them, it is very hard to call one in and bring one home. In the morning they are going out into the field looking for some hens and you can always catch them before they make it to the hens.. but this is just personal experience. By afternoon, they are already with the hens
