How do you train a hunting dog to accept a kitten in the house?

My family is most likely going to get a new bengal kitten and we have two dogs at home. ones a silver lab, and ones a yellow lab. our yellow lab is a hunting dog who chases bunnies and sometimes kills birds. but when hes inside the house, hes really gentle and sweet and good with children, so we know hed be good eventually but were just not sure what steps to take to train him to be good.How do you train a hunting dog to accept a kitten in the house?
Labs and retrievers are very easy dogs to train, and as long as he behaves indoors, he may be fine with your kitten. Dogs sometimes (but not always) have a sense of what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior by watching their owners.

Never ever just plop your pets in a room together and expect them to get along at first sight. You'll need to introduce your kitten properly to your dog, and vise versa. If you do a google search on pet introductions, there are many good resources. Be sure to do a lot of reading up!

If your dog is showing aggression towards cats (or any other human or pet), NEVER hit! The best thing to do is to yell ';NO!, BAD!'; and immediately force the dog to lay down on the floor and onto its back or side. Hold them down until they ';give up'; and hold still for you. This is forcing your dog to be submissive to you, and when your dog doesn't try to get up, he's essentially saying ';Ok, you win. I'll be good.';

This doesn't hurt your dog at all - especially if you grab him by the scruff of the neck in one hand, and force his rump down with the other hand.

Also, it may not work the first time, so keep at it. All of the people in your house must do this in order for it to have consistent training. Since it's a lab, I'm sure he'll learn quickly what is unacceptable behavior.

My husband's dog is part ';fighting breed'; (Sharpei) and used to be extremely cat-aggressive, but now she plays very gently with 3 house cats. She has always - and still does - go after, and some times kill vermin if given the chance. She's watched more closely now that everyone knows she's aggressive towards wild animals.... So - proof that your hunting dog can be cat-friendly!

Please feel free to write me with any questions!

All the best with your new Bengal!How do you train a hunting dog to accept a kitten in the house?
once you have trained a dog to hunt and kill live animals it is near impossible to return them to being good to other animals.

You have already put the natural wolf instinct of killing back into your dogs mind. bringing a kitten into the house is to your dog another prey animal it is more than likely going to be attacked. Dogs naturally are enemy's to cats

Also on another note any well behaved/trained dog can be good with children, but you should not trust any dog with children no matter how placid.

The wolf Instinct is always going to be there and could be triggered by as little as a child screaming. In your case a scream from a child is like a rabbit screaming when it has been caught or snared so be aware.
Ask the dog whisperer.....Cesar Milan. Good question. Go to his website and find out where you get the answer.
