I need a rifle that is new and that can take down Large to medium animals and what kind of cartridge is best used in it. What is the best hunting rifle for the African plains?
The .375H%26amp;H is considered to be the minimum caliber for dangerous game in africa and it works extremely well on the larger plains game such as Kudu, Gemsbok, wildabeast etc as well. Having said that, there are many choices depending on what you are after, and how well you shoot. The .270 winchester has been used to take leopard and many plains animals, but so has just about every other caliber out there. I would prefer to take two rifles to africa, one, my .270 and two, the .375H%26amp;H but not if I were going after the big 5. I'd want a lot More cartridge on my side than that.

What is the best hunting rifle for the African plains?
One of the classic rounds that can be used for everything in Africa is the 375 H+H Magnum. You can use the heavy bullets for the big game and lighter bullets for smaller game. With a lighter bullet you get more velocity and a flatter trajectory. You can also find the ammo anywhere in Africa, something that can not be said for some of the more modern rounds.
Any well made bolt action rifle can handle it but I am partial to Heyms from Germany.
The minimum big/dangerous game rifle for Africa is the .375 Holland and Holland Magnum. I have been using Federal 300 grain soft points in mine hunting big wild boar in South Texas (USA). Were I to hunt the African Plains I'd probably buy a Merkel Double in .375 H %26amp; H Magnum. My two big bore rifles are both Ruger #1s one in .458 Winchester Magnum and the other one in .375 H %26amp; H. In case you're not familiar with the #1, it is a single-shot, extremely accurate American-made rifle.

Well a 338 will not work as many countries have a minimum caliber set at 375 so the smallest is a 375H%26amp;H. Which is not a beginners rifle by any means.
H%26amp;H Make some good african rifles. Kimber does too or you can get one custom built.
H%26amp;H would be my choice for the best out there. But being the BEST comes at a PRICE many of their rifles are $10,000.+ US
Since you mentioned large game, that means you need at least a 375. I've been looking at the 375 Ruger, and CZ has the inexpensive 550 in 375 H%26amp;H and 416 Rigby (and even 458 Lott, if you want to go that big and slow).
405 Winchester, 375 H%26amp;H Magnum, 416 Remington Magnum, 416 Rigby, 458 Winchester Magnum%26gt;*.. Pick one.*
There is a big club of nice folks who regularly hunt Africa using their Marlin 1895 Model 45-70's, which are legal on big 5 anywhere.
A brand well-known for quality chambered in .375 H%26amp;H.
