Considering the fact that the animal you hunt is free to roam in the wild and eats actual food from the wild, rather than being injected with drugs, abused, and forced to stand in knee deep crap at a slaughter house, is it usually safe to eat for example, raw deer that you hunted from the wilderness? As long as it was recently killed and is fresh? When hunting is it relatively safe to eat the meat you hunt raw?
Excellent question.
I wouldn't do it, but thats not to say you are wrong. Humans should be able to eat raw meat, in fact many do - STEAK TARTARE!
Humans also did so for millions of years, certain tribes still do, and people in desperate situations are sometimes forced to.
I think it would be safe to eat fresh wild meat as long as the animal is healthy, and you are healthy. I would imagine you would have to ';condition'; yourself to it before hand though and not eat large amounts straight away. For example, eat raw veg for a while to get your immune system up, then eat one chunk of meat to get yourself used to it. Then gradually increase quantity. A large amount of meat, raw or cooked is never needed. Meat should only be an occasional part of the human diet.
I bet you anything you would digest raw meat a lot faster than cooked meat. Wild meat would definitely have a much lower incidence of E-Coli and other crap like that. Just look at free range chicken - way lower food poisoning rate than battery chicken.
I know that dogs switched to raw diets come on leaps and bounds as they are eating what nature intended. I don't think anyone who eats stuff like refined, sugary breakfast cereals cannot really slam eating raw meat.
We have definitely become germ obsessed. I never handle meat with gloves, and raw meat has touched surfaces and not been cleaned immideately and I havn't died of food poisoning. My dogs have big beef bones in the kitchen and garden and i will handle these without fear of dying! My dogs get raw meat all the time and touching their bowls hasnt killed me yet!
Unless you're a complet idiot and a slob, you should never be worried about food poisoning from meat.
I bet you would be absolutely fine after eating raw wild meat.
I personally prefer occasional cooked meat (but then I have never tried raw meat!).
Good luck! When hunting is it relatively safe to eat the meat you hunt raw?
I eat very rare deer steaks and I mean so rare the middle is still raw and bloody. I have eaten the heart of a deer raw with no ill effects. One time I was cutting up deer steaks and my, then 6 year old daughter was stealing them off the table and eating them raw, she was fine but I did scold her for it. She’s 26 now and has kids and healthy as can be.
But now there are more nasty things in the environment, there is even a type of “mad cow” disease in the spinal fluids of some elk and deer that humans can get. So unless it’s a clean animal I would be careful about raw meat.
I will still eat my deer steaks bloody and raw in the middle but will not let spinal fluid, bowel matter, dirt or brain matter touch my meat, that’s pretty easy to prevent.
I would only consider elk, moose, deer and caribou for super rare or raw meat, any bird or small game should never be eaten unless well cooked.
I have personally never been sick from eating or handling wild game meat. I did get terribly ill one time from drinking spring water.
The threat of getting very sick is there and very real. It's up to you to decide weather or not its worth the risk for you personally.
I wouldn't eat raw wild game. All of the injections given to domestic live stock keep them free of parasites. Since wild game do not get these protective shots, they could carry a parasite that you could catch if you eat raw game. Cook it well and you are safe.
The eating of uncooked meat from any animal is risky and to eat that of a ';wild'; animal is foolhardy. Animals carry pathogens that can sicken and even kill you.
No. You should even use rubber gloves when field dressing and processing to keep the transfer of pathogens down to a minimum, not to mention clean up is easier. I carry a box of latex gloves (Walgreen's $5.00) whenever I'm hunting.
No. Wild game is exposed to, and hosts, all sorts of parasites
and diseases.
You should cook wild meat 'well done' at all times.
There's even something new out there, that's not effected by cooking.
Google 'TSE'.
NO! Wild game can be full of parasites that are dangerous. Only thorough cooking can kill both parasites and larvae.
So you think diseases and illness only happen to animals that are ranch raised and slaughter house processed? Wrong. It is NEVER safe to eat raw wild game.
Not recommended.*
Should be.....The dude on Man vs. Wild and my husband say so.
